Canggu is the most developed surf town in Asia and the camps here reflect that: pools, gyms, coworking, yoga twice a day. The surf is a run of beach and reef breaks over a few kilometres of black sand, forgiving enough to learn on at Batu Bolong and sharp enough at Echo Beach to keep an intermediate busy. What separates the camps is not the waves - everyone surfs the same handful of spots - but how loud a week you want.
Batu Bolong, Berawa or Pererenan
Everyone surfs the same handful of spots — the strip you sleep on decides how loud the week is.
Batu Bolong · The beginner wave
A slow, mellow left and right over sand and soft reef, with a wall of surf schools on the beach. The busiest strip. Most forgiving wave · Centre of the scene.
Berawa · Slightly quieter
A few minutes north with several of the newer camps, close to the beach clubs but off the busiest strip. Newer camps · Beach clubs close by.
Pererenan · Rice fields left
Further out, still rice fields in places — where you go if the point of the trip is surfing rather than the town. Quietest lineups · 15 min by scooter.
When to go: waves by month
How often each surf town here has waves for each level, month by month, 1995–2025. First lessons happen in the whitewater near the shore, so they are said in words; the other levels are named by what you can do and the size of the wave on the body. What’s my level? · How we calculate this

Beginner (green waves) (knee to chest high): no month on most days · Intermediate (chest high to just overhead): most days in Aug–Jun · Advanced (head high and up): most days in Apr–Oct
On most days the wave at the peak is bigger than chest high at every spot on our list for this level. All of them are open to the swell: there may be smaller waves on the inside or in sheltered corners that the model cannot see.
Model estimate: no suitable buoy within 50 km to check it against.

Model estimate: no suitable buoy within 50 km to check it against.
Days that miss first lessons are too small when every learner spot is under 0.5 m, and too big when none is in the 0.5–2 m band and one is above it. The other levels are read on the face of the wave at its peak: beginner on green waves 0.6–1.2 m, intermediate 1.2–2 m, advanced 1.5 m and up.

When to go
April to September is the dry season and the reliable window: offshore winds most mornings, consistent swell, and the west coast working. October to March is the wet season, when the wind swings onshore in Canggu and the good waves move to the east side of the island. Camps run year-round and will take you across if that is what the forecast says. The water sits at 28-30°C, so it is boardshorts either way.
Crowds are the real variable
Batu Bolong at dawn in July is one of the busiest lineups in the world. This is worth planning around rather than being surprised by: the camps that surf early or drive to quieter spots deliver a very different week from the ones that walk down at ten. If a crowded lineup would ruin the trip, look at the camps based in Pererenan or the ones in Uluwatu, forty minutes south.
Getting there and getting around
Denpasar airport is about 45 minutes away, longer in traffic, and every camp arranges pickup. Once here, a scooter is how everyone moves and most camps rent them. Traffic in Canggu is genuinely heavy and the distances are short - the difference between a camp on the beach road and one fifteen minutes inland is bigger than the map suggests.
Common questions
Is Canggu good for a complete beginner?
Yes. Batu Bolong is one of the more forgiving waves in Asia and the whole beginner infrastructure is here. The trade-off is the crowd - you will be sharing it with a lot of other people learning the same thing.
Canggu or Uluwatu?
Canggu to learn and for the town; Uluwatu once you can surf. Uluwatu is a series of serious reef breaks on the Bukit peninsula, forty minutes south, and is not where you take a first lesson.
Do I need my own board?
No. Every camp here includes boards, and Bali has more board shops and shapers than almost anywhere - buying a used one for a long trip is cheap and easy to resell.
