Taghazout is where Europe goes to surf in winter. Three villages sit along ten kilometres of the same coast - Taghazout, Tamraght and Aourir - and between them hold a run of right-hand points that break for months when the Atlantic turns on. The camps are close enough that the village you choose changes the week more than the camp does.
Taghazout · Busiest scene
The busy one: cafes, board hire, and Anchor Point and Panorama within walking distance. The classic surf-town week. Walkable point breaks · Most cafes and nightlife.
Tamraght · Best for beginners
Ten minutes south and quieter, right beside Banana Beach - the sandy beginner spot the whole region learns on. Beside Banana Beach · Quieter evenings.
Aourir · Cheapest beds
A working town with the least surf-tourism feel and the lowest prices. Camps here drive you to the same breaks. Lowest prices in the area · Real Moroccan town life.
When to go: waves by month
How often each surf town here has waves for each level, month by month, 1995–2025. First lessons happen in the whitewater near the shore, so they are said in words; the other levels are named by what you can do and the size of the wave on the body. What’s my level? · How we calculate this

Surf Star Morocco says: "there is only about 2 days per year usually when the surf is too big to go in" - our figures read more days too big for first lessons here, so take them as a guide. (camp’s page)
Days that miss first lessons are too small when every learner spot is under 0.5 m, and too big when none is in the 0.5–2 m band and one is above it. The other levels are read on the face of the wave at its peak: beginner on green waves 0.6–1.2 m, intermediate 1.2–2 m, advanced 1.5 m and up.

★ 4.4/5 (1046 reviews) · Anchor Point
Surf Maroc's Taghazout property, one of the longest-running operations on this coast and among the most reviewed in the region.
The three villages are not the same week
Taghazout village is the busy one: cafes, board hire, and Anchor Point and Panorama within walking distance. Tamraght is ten minutes south, quieter, and sits beside Banana Beach - the sandy beginner spot the whole region learns on. Aourir is a working town with the least surf-tourism feel and the cheapest beds. Almost every camp will drive you to whichever break is working, so the village decides what you walk out into in the evening, not what you surf.
Beginner or point-break surfer
Banana Beach and Devil's Rock are sand-bottomed and forgiving, and that is where lessons happen. The points - Anchor Point, Killer Point, Boilers - are rock, long and fast, and they are the reason experienced surfers keep coming back. A first-timer does not need to worry about them; an intermediate should ask a camp directly how often they run point sessions rather than sticking to the beach.
When to go
Season runs October to March, and that is the point of Morocco: it works precisely when Europe does not. Winter swell lights up the points, and the water sits around 17-20°C - a 3/2 wetsuit, not the 4/3 you would need in Portugal. Summer is small and hot, fine for a first lesson but not what the region is known for.
Getting there and getting around
Agadir airport is about forty minutes away and most camps include the transfer. You do not need a car: camps run daily surf transport, and that is genuinely part of what you are paying for here - the breaks work on different tides and swell directions, and someone reading that for you is worth more in Morocco than in most places.
What a week costs
Morocco is the cheapest of the major European winter destinations. Hostel-style camps start well below what the same week costs in Portugal or the Canaries, and even the boutique end is moderate. Where camps differ is what the price includes: some quote room and breakfast with surfing extra, others a full package with lessons, transport and half board. Compare what is bundled before comparing the numbers.
Common questions
Is Taghazout good for beginners?
Yes - Banana Beach in Tamraght and Devil's Rock are sandy and gentle, and every camp teaches there. The famous point breaks nearby are for experienced surfers, but you never have to go near them.
Taghazout, Tamraght or Aourir?
Taghazout village for walkable points and the busiest scene, Tamraght for a quieter base beside the beginner beach, Aourir for the cheapest beds and least tourism. They are within ten kilometres of each other and camps drive to the surf regardless.
When is the best time to surf Morocco?
October to March. Winter swell is what makes the points work, the water stays around 17-20°C, and it is the season when most of Europe is closed out or freezing.
Do I need a wetsuit?
Yes, but a light one - a 3/2 covers the winter season. That is a step warmer than Portugal and a large part of why people come here between November and February.
Is it safe to travel there alone?
Taghazout and Tamraght have hosted surf travellers for decades and camps are used to solo guests - most of the social side of a camp week exists for exactly that. Normal travel sense applies as anywhere.
How does Morocco compare with Ericeira or Fuerteventura?
Morocco is the warm winter option with long, forgiving right-hand points and the lowest prices. Ericeira has more varied and more powerful waves but colder water and unforgiving reef; Fuerteventura sits between the two and is easier to reach from Europe.
